To me the biggest bummer was Mario Golf not being the series definer that I would have liked. While many are more productive at home without a commute, what about those with young kids? What about those who were sick themselves, or perhaps had to help care for, or sadder yet bury, a family member? Those folks weren't clocking 40 hours a week, lol.

Not just hardware (anybody paying attention to the world around knows this), but software too. But it's not the murderer's row of bangers hardcore Nintendo fans crave.Ĭounterpoint to that: 2021 is another year of it being really hard to get things done. Of course, at least a few of them (3D World, Pokemon, and Mario Party) will sell 10 million copies, and a few others will cross 5, so they'll make a large segment of the audience happy. Sure, there's Metroid Dread, but the Nintendo releases this year were mostly remakes or lower tier games. The biggest glaring thing is that the 2021 Switch first-party software lineup is not one that will stand up to the ages. Anything else seems like over indexing on vocal minorities. It's really hard to go any lower than a B+/A- with a straight face. Just focusing on the positives, I'd say I would give the year a B for Nintendo. Lastyly, there was a bunch of cool Nintendo games that released this year that I haven't gotten around to yet This was a multiplat release, but Nintendo still co-own the series, so they must have had some input in the decision to rerelease Blackwater as multiplat.

I was thrilled to be able to play Maiden of Blackwater since I love this series but never owned a Wii U. I had been asking for Mythra to come to Smash since before Ultimate released, and she might be the most fun character to play in the game right now (Shout out to Kazuya's addition too, and all the sweet Tekken music he brought with him). Two of my dreams also came true this year Mythra got added into Smash and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater got a Switch port. Monster Hunter Rise was amazing, improved on World in a bunch of ways and improved the online side of the game, making it much easier to just jump into some big multiplayer hunts. This was a game had missed back on the Wii U and I had a great time playing through this in co-op with my nephew. Super Mario 3D World Deluxe + Bowser's Fury was great fun at the start of the year. I'm just ranking this for me personally, not Nintendo objectively. Not one of their best years, but still solid. I think Nintendo have done pretty well for 2021. Thanks to above for reminding me of what we've gotten this year. Metroid Dread is honestly the biggest release they had this year and quite frankly it's the title that carried the entire year for me.įor me the highlights of 2021 are thus. So this year has been something of a year for remasters/remakes and re-releases for Nintendo. Same could be said for Skyward Sword HD which many felt was another "Bare minimum" effort yet still far more polished than GTA Trilogy that Rockstar crapped out. Super Mario 3D World is a fine re-release with some added content. I was pretty bummed out as I had been looking forward to it, but hey if it's to further polish them? Then so be it.

Not to sound reductive but if we are strictly talking about Nintendo here? It looks even worse.Īlso consider that Advance Wars got bumped. And even if we look at that list above? How many of those are third party releases? Super Monkey Ball is SEGA, Shin Megami Tensei V is Atlus (though it is atm a Switch exclusive), Monster Hunter Rise as well is a Capcom title. This has for most publishers been something of an off year. While they had a number of titles? I wouldn't say they had a lot of major relelases outside of Metroid Dread.
